I have been using one of the automatic cat feeders. You fill it and as they eat the food comes down. I am having lots of waste and now have starlings raiding it. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just use a big, heavy plastic dog bowl. My duck yard is pretty securely fenced in and covered in deer netting to deter hawks, so I don't have any problems with food thieves during the day - little Chickadees can fit through the fencing, but the duck chow's too big for them, so they pick at the ducks poo instead

Maybe a scarecrow or something could help to keep the Starlings away, and you could fill the feeder with just what they eat in about 10 minutes twice a day to reduce wastage?

I use a wooden trough that I made myself. We were having a big issue with crows standing on it and eating the corn but a piece of mesh fencing stappled to the top fixed that. The ducks can still eat from the sides and the crows only stand on it and even that has slowly stopped. I also dont feed free choice though, they get a gallon of food in the morning and thats it for the day as they are free range.

Are you feeding mash or crumbles? If so perhaps switching to pellets might help cut down on the wasted food? My ducks eat every last pellet then while they are out of the pen for the day the chickens come in and clean up any crumbs

I feed them on a bed of pine boughs. No bowl, just on the boughs. There is no waste this way and the boughs are clean as they only poop in one spot in their pen.
