what do you use for bedding in the brooder???

i was goin to use shavings... is there danger of the chicks eating it and choking?

None. The shavings are big enough that they may peck at them, but they don't actually eat them. Once they start with their chick crumbles, they know the difference. Good instincts.

I know of other people, though, who use paper towels until the babies are about 3 weeks old.

I have brooded over 100 chicks during the past 12 months.

I used a towel till 24hrs after the last chick hatched then switched to shavings.

How often do you change to fresh shavings?
I'm using paper towels, but have to change twice a day.....it's getting dirty sooner, too.
