This is my second flock I've had.. I currently have 6 barred rock hens and 1 drake pekin about 26 weeks old.
Ii raised them all from hatchlings, follow me around hop on my lap, shoulder, you name it.
I have to that are my cuddliest that will hop on my lap or back (if I'm bending over), then they will "scratch and peck" like they do with fresh bedding or dirt.
My guess is it's a happy response (happy chickens peck and scratch).. thoughts?

I have a pullet that jumps on my back when I bend down and scratches like in dirt too. She is a lavender bantam Cochin. I think maybe she sees imaginary bugs.

i have a barred rock that does that to me too.. as they get older and bigger, it's slowed down.. i think it's cute.. if i sit on the ground, they still all perch on my legs and shoulders.
