What does this noise mean?

My hens are nearly 17 weeks old, and recently they have been making a loud screeching noise. It's like a long 'baaaaawk' sound, and one will do it and the others follow. What are they saying?

You mean a long, slightly annoying sound as if they're ranting or droning on and on? Sounds to me like the sound they make when they're almost to the point of needing to lay an egg.

Otherwise it sounds like an alarm/warning call.


Can't say for sure unless I hear it.

Thanks, I will try to get a video of them. It's hard because whenever I start recording they shut up and try to peck the camera!

That noise means it's a chicken. If it went..... MOO ..... that means it's a cow!
