I have one white leg horn rooster that my children hatched so he rules the roost. Our hens are buffs, R/Rs, B/Rs, and EEs. We currently have 25 eggs in the bator from these girls. What kind of chicks should we expect? I have searched and searched but only found info when the hen is a white leghorn. Curiosity is killing me! Are we going to end up with a bunch of little white leg horns?

Didn't mean to offend the leghorn community.

A mistake I won't make again. Will they be sex-links or muts? Does anyone have photos where the rooster was a white leghorn? Hey I spelled it correctly!

Road Island Red
Bard Rock

Did I misuse the abbreviations? Sorry guys! I am a newbee but I am really trying because I love my chickens. I appreciate and value all the advise I can get. This site has helped us successfully build our incubator, hatch our chickens, build our coop, and now we are enjoying fresh eggs everyday!! You can read about our story on MY PAGE.

will be kind of an unpredictable cross. I beleive with the barred rock hens as long as it's not a black, white, or barred rooster they will be sex links, thats all I know on the subject. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure White Leghorns are dominant white so crossing with them, or at least the white leghorn hens with other breeds of roos, the chicks would be all white with little black spots. I'm not sure if it's the same with the white leghorn being a roo though.

As for the Sexlinks, you wouldn't get sexlinks with the RIR hen and if the roo is Dom White, you wouldn't get sexlinks with the Barred hens either.

And a correction to what rittert3 said, When breeding for Black Sexlinks with Barred Rock hens, Black roos WILL work. But you cannot use a Barred roo and white white roo wouldn't be a good choice either unless you know their genetics because they may be masking barring under the white or they may be dominant white. Any other colored roo on Barred hens would give sexlinks though.

Thanks everyone for your input. It sounds like it is going to be a craps shoot since no one seems real familiar with a white leghorn roo as the daddy. Hatching will be an exciting time! And I have to admit, this genetic thing has me totally confused.

All I can tell you is that they will be cute!

I lovve my leghorn rooster, he's such a sweetheart and my 2 girls are to!

P.S You could find someone on here that sells leghorn eggs for hatching to get you some girls!
