Found this hole behind the air conditioner condenser unit. It's huge!! You could easily fit a football in it. Do you think it's a possum or raccoon? I haven't seen any around here except for road kill.

Should I just shovel the dirt (sand) back into it? Any suggestions?

Armadillo or what we call around here a gopher turtle. Since you are so close it might be the turtle. They are nasty and I have seen them latch on to a dogs snout. Do you have a creek nearby? Is the hole rounded on the top and kind of flat on the bottm?

Yes! We have a creek that runs through the property. I can't really tell if the hole is flat on the bottom because it curves around.

We are only about 45 minutes to the Alabama line, and I've seen several turtles around here. I assumed they were all snapping turtles. Here's a picture of a turtle that was stalking my chickens several weeks ago:

A gopher turtle has a noticeable yellow on his underside. I do not know if that is their real name or a local name. I am not even sure if it is spelled gopher. I have a creek by my house that is dried up and they search for water. I would imagine under the ac has some condesation at times. Ok, here is a link http://www.nsis.org/wildlife/rept/turt-tort.html There are pictures to of the hole and the turtle.

i would say it's an armadillo! have you noticed any small holes in your yard,i think armadillo's search for grubs and worms making small holes in the ground.they'll really mess up a yard. they are noctournal.

Looks a lot like the grounhog holes I get around here.
