Well I had a chicken to go broody on me. This is the first time I have had a broody chicken. Since we don't have a rooster I got 3 eggs from a friend. We candled the eggs on day 11. All was good. I candled the eggs again on Sat. All was still good. On Tuesday, day 19 there was a baby chicken, it was dead, no shell or anything. It was small and wet. Egg two...I picked up #2 egg by mistake yesterday and didn't realize until this morning. The egg was cold. I thought it was too late. I opened the egg up and it still had a heart beat. Neadless to say it was too late for the baby. It still had its insides outside of it's little body. So today Nanny (my broady chicken) should have had #3 under her. She was still sitting in the same place but there was no egg, shell or slimmy mess, there was some little black feathers in the box.
So my question is will a broody chicken eat the baby chicken or would one of the other big girls eat the baby chicken?????
Any help understanding this would be great.
