What happened to my rooster

My buff orpington rooster was fine when I let him out this morning but when I went to put the chickens away his feathers were clumped together and he was missing a bunch of feathers and had broken blood feathers. I brought him inside to check on him and found flies and fly eggs all over his back I cleaned him up and couldn't find any oped wounds just like bruising and broken blood feathers. i think it might have been a fox or a hawk but I'm not sure. Would like to know how to prevent this happening again

Can you post a picture? If he's bloody at all you might want to put him in a cage by himself so the girls don't peck on those exposed blood feathers. But put him where they can still see each other. Supervise so they don't peck him through the cage.
