What happened to this duck?

I noticed the other day there were lots of black wing feathers strewn about the grass outside, then I saw one of the usual drakes that come and his wings are mostly gone with nothing but quills poking out in back.
Could he have plucked out all those feathers out by himself? Or possibly another drake did this to him? It's on both his wings and probably looks worse than it is. I've just never seen this before. I have a parrot that gets quills in but he never loses all his wing feathers like this guy. Is this normal? Pic---

How pretty he reminds me of my first Muscovy Drake.

Looks like they have been broken off but it's also molt time so hopefully he'll get rid of what left and grow back his beautiful wing feathers again. He won't be able to fly right now.
Most likely he's been fighting or someone did that to him.

You mean it looks like a PERSON deliberately did that to him?! That's horrible! I hope it's from fighting with other drakes, but I never see them treating him badly. He's 1 in a flock of about 5 drakes that keep together. They never get aggressive with each other as far as I can see. I truly hope a person didn't do this to the poor thing. That's just despicable.

I hope he's not in any pain from it. :(

Just hard to know what happened my Muscovy get his wing feathers broken from fighting with my gander and it is always against the fence it seems. But if your not seeing any fighting then I am at a loss unless human. Sad to say some places Muscovy are so hated they are treated very bad.

Thanks Lydia for the information. I truly hope a human doing that isn't the case. I wonder if he just plucked them all out himself? Or could they have all just fallen out on their own? Doesn't all those white quills coming in at the same time indicate that the old feathers just got pushed out by the incoming quills? I've just never seen so many coming in at once like this. Are they painful to him?
When my parrot molts he likes when I scratch and massage gently around the new quills, so I wonder if it itches or feels uncomfortable to him.
I'll keep a close eye on him and give him extra attention. He stays by my window pretty much throughout the day and just waits for his treats.

I doubt he’d pull out his own feathers and I do see some quills that aren’t broken. So I guess it’s now wait an see. When my big drake molts I find broken a whole feathers laying around.

Ok that makes me feel much better because there's whole black feathers laying all around the immediate area right outside. And I seriously doubt the neighbors would do this to him because they feed them too. Hopefully he's just having a very extreme molt, or had a bad fight with another drake. I just don't like to think a human would do such a thing to the poor duck.
