I'm so glad I found this forum! Ok, here's the thing. We own a house on a half acre lot and have been here for 32 years. During the last 15 years we've had chickens and roosters adopt us. So far we have a hen and rooster. They disappeared. I think the owners came into our yard and took them -not quite sure. Then we had a brown chicken about 5 years ago, that stayed for a month. She looked fine and then she mysteriously died. Then the last one we had was I think a leghorn hen, but I'm not certain. I don't know where the hen came from, just like all the chickens and roosters -they suddenly appear in our backyard and seem quite content here. The most recent hen, was here for about 4 to 5 months, up until yesterday morning. My Dh says he saw it eating when first got up. I even went as far at to buy chicken scratch and a chicken feeder for it, that every bird and his brother were eating out of too. About 3 weeks ago, the hen would make only short appearances only to eat and then would disappear. I later learned that it was under our pine tree and that she had laid about 5 to 6 eggs. She sat on them religiously for those three weeks. Then about two days ago, I guess she realized the eggs weren't going to hatch and she came out and was walking around. She walked around kinda depressed looking (mind you these are only my feelings and what I observed) and instead of walking around actively, scratching for food like she use to when she first came into our yard, she looked like she was moping around. Then yesterday, I didn't see her at all. By late afternoon, I went looking for her and I couldn't find her anywhere. At the beginning, when she first came here, she looked to be so content and would even come up to the slide door and pecked on it so that I could feed her. I can't figure it out. The only reminder she left, were two eggs under the pine tree. The rest looked cracked. Probably from critters trying to eat them. As a young girl, we had chickens and roosters as pets. We even had baby chicks hatch in a late summer evening. It was so magical! Would anyone who knows more about chickens or hens and their habits, know what could've happen to her? Did she go back to wherever she came from. I hope nothing got to her, but then I didn't find feathers anywhere. Dh says that these critters are just fickle. It's sad.
Thank you. ~Ella
