What have my guineas been doing....?

well that is my 9 guineas, 20 ducks, 4 geese and about 40 chickens? DH took our 2 dogs to the vet for routine checkups only to find out that my Giant Schnauzer/Airdale has Anaplasmosis. Anaplasmosis, and emerging disease, is surpassing Lyme disease in some areas of the country. Cause: Deer tick

At least it was caught before she starting showing any symptoms.

ew...never heard of it...are the symptoms like lymes?

It's treated the same as lymes.
common signs: Silent Infection
*Lack of energy
*high fever
* swollen, very painful joints
*loss of appetite
*vomiting
*diarrhea

Disease progression: very low numbers of platelets and white blood cells, chronic joint pain, nerological signs (rare)

Co-infection with lymes is possible

Diagnosis is blood test

Prognosis: if caught and treated early, the outcome is usually very good for a full recovery from symptoms.
No vaccine available.

Treatment: Antibiotics- doxycycline, tetracycline
