what if you breed gold to red

Gold is buff, I believe. I have a RIR roo over Buff Orp hen pullet. She is a flaming, bright red with golden hightlights. Just a more iridescent red.

that looks cool but my red would be a bit darker than rode island red so just a bit darker I think

Meg is a very good layer. The RIR sire of Meg was a very very dark one, not a hatchery bird and the Buff Orps were exhibition size ones. The sire also produced my pure RIR pullet, Scarlett, now owned by rooster-red. So, I would say Meg's lines were very dark.
