I got fertile eggs from a farm near by. I called the farm to ask them what breed of chickens I would have and they said "California Cross". After googling for the breed I couldn't find anything! I called later and asked again.. this time they said it was a cross between a Rhode Island Red and something else. But the person on the phone forgot what the other chicken was.

Anybody know?

Thanks!

Not sure which smiley to put here the laughing one or the head banging bricks

California Gray and California White are the California breeds
California Gray Leghorn Barred Rock cross not found too often other than in hatcheries which also call them Production Blacks
California White California Gray Roo with White leghorn hens much easier to find they are super layers
Now if they sold them as crosses it's possible they had California Whites crossed with RIR that would be about the only way you could get a RIR out of that

Well... I must look pretty silly now! I am new to chickens... so maybe I can get away with it?

it could be a red sex link it's lighter than my stock but going on the idea there is a RIR in there someplace...they are a cross between a RIR roo and usually a RIW or White Rock but others can be used. Are all this color or are some solid yellow/white?
If you want to...stick them in a box and mail them to me so I can take a closer look

it would be in good company with a few hundred little fuzzy butts here.

The wing feathers that have grown in are mostly white, however there is some yellowish tints in there too. The other chicks from the same hatching all looked the same.

I went to the farm's website and read that they keep RIR and Leghorn chickens, but if they can't tell me that on the phone then who knows what else their keeping!

My chicks came from a brown eggs, so I don't think they could be Leghorns. ( Leghorns have white eggs, right?)

I've just googled all of the breeds you mentions and they are very pretty birds!

Here is an updated picture of the chick. ( 4 days later, now at 11th day) Do you think "he" is a roo? I'm hoping "he" is a pullet. I have grown very fond of this one! The exposure here is a little darker than what it would actually look like. Camera operation fail!
