What is a compost?

OK, I need worms for my 7 chicks and a few people have suggested that I should start a compost, but sadly I don't know how to start or even know what to do... can anyone help me out??

From what I understand, you take a bin and put dirt and compostable materials (banana peels, egg shells, etc.) and add a bunch of worms. The worms go nuts and start reproducing and you can just give a shovelful or two to your chickies when it's getting full. I'm thinking of doing it myself one of these days...add it to the huge list of other plans and ideas, etc.

Thanks, does anyone know about how long this compost thing takes to get a lot of worms? And about how big my compost should be?
