They arrived today and they are much smaller than I expected. Do I need a heat lamp? I just googled the term and it said they are 20 weeks old. There is no way these chicks are 20 weeks old. I am thinking 2 weeks. I ordered them from Ideal poultry.

At that age yes I would advise a heat lamp. It appears you got sexed pullets rather than started pullets.

I am thinking more like 2 DAYS.... It is my understanding that chicks don't do well after that time period being shipped. They look like mini-tennis balls to me, classic new hatch look.

Shoot! I ordered started pullets. I am in Florida. You would think it would be hot enough outside, but this morning it is 75 degrees. They are so adorable. Guess I'm going to tractor supply and getting a heat lamp.

The whole reason for getting started pullets was so I wouldn't have to deal with a heat lamp.

Can you recheck your confirmation email and make sure it doesn't say sexed pullets instead of started pullets?

There is a benefit of them being this young. They are less likely to carry illness, they will bond to you easier, and you get to watch them grow/change.

I would ask for any extra money back that would be the difference between the cost of sexed day olds and started pullets. Here that would be $7 extra per girl in age. Day old RSLs are $2.45 and POL girls are $9.45.

That is the price for day olds.

It would cost more than that in feed to grow them to POL status.
