What is Deep Litter Method?

Hi, i wasnt quite sure of what section i should post this but anyway,.... the subjec it all basicly says it all... what is deep litter method and if it has a certain purpose what is it and does it work?

There is a ton of info on this site re: DLM - do a search for it and you will pull up a bunch. My DLM is a layer of at least 6-6" of large dried pine shavings (to start with) sprinkled with DE (diatomaceous earth) and then tossed about. Make sure chickens are not in coop when you toss the DE in - not good for their respiratory system, or yours! The DE helps to break down the poop and keeps certain bugs out of the coop. I replace any shavings that get wet after a rain storm and add a fresh layer of shavings and DE about once a week. Have had the same litter in the coop for about 2 months and there is no smell, no flies and the chickens seem to really love it.
 
It works like a charm as long as the coop is kept dry and well ventilated. I use the deep litter method and only have to clean out the coop a couple of times a year.
