What is Egg Bound Mean?

I heard the term "egg bound". What does it mean and how do you know the signs/ symptoms?

You would be better posting this in the "Chicken Behaviors and Egglaying" Section, but Eggbound is a term used to describe a hen that isn't laying due to the fact she has an egg stuck inside her. To fix this, you can usually set the hen in some warm water and massage her abdomen for a while.

How would you know if it was stuck?
symptoms, signs, etc.
What would happen if you didn't/couldn't get it out?
What does a cull that looks swollen mean?can that happen?
