I don't know what grit/s is?

Grit to me here is crushed oyster shell.

I'm hoping you americans call it something else and that I might be able to get some here in Nz

Chicken grit is ground granite stone, basically little pebbles that the chickens need to grind food in their crop. Ground oyster shells is given for extra calcium.

"Grits" in my part of the world (American Southern states) is also a name for people food: it is ground hominy-- sort of like southern polenta! Yummy cooked with cheese and butter!

Do you think that free ranging my chickens will get enough little stones and pieces of grit by themselves?

My vote would be "yes"...but I still keep a small dish of grit in the coop just in case. Oyster shells are useless as grit, but great for adding calcium to their diet (important for laying hens)

Grit you buy at the feed stores is crushed granite. Granite is a pretty hard stone that does an excellent job of grinding up a chicken feed in their gizzards.

ok I am glad someone brought up grits...

I am in canada and we dont have grits... (or biscuits and gravy for that matter but thats a whole other ball of wax)

I went to a restaurant for breakfast when I was in VA and I asked the server for grits... she said you really want 'em?... I said yeah I have never tried them...she said they were gross and not to try them...so me not wanting to be a fool I let her talk me outta them... but fell in love with biscuits and gravy and I cant get them here and I have even tried making them and i mess it up... I cant get the gravy right and have even tried the little packages where you just add water and sausage meat and it just does not taste the same...
