What is in scratch? I have read it is a treat for chickens.
I also see it isn't good for when it is hot...so I will wait till later to get some.

But what is in the mix...corn and what??

2 grain scratch is corn and wheat.

The more expensive multgrains can also include milo, sunflower seeds, field peas or soybeans, oats, etc...

With wheat prices going through the roof, would a bag of deer corn be an appropriate substitute? don't know the prices right now, just a thought.

if it very hot out i don't give any scratch but if it not as hot out i give it to them in the evening before they go to bed. ive read that you shouldn't feed it to them in the morning or afternoon during the summer but a bit in the evening it fine. i buy purina scratch with 2 parts corn 1 part oats and 1 part wheat. you can also mix boss, barley, rye, millet and other things in with it for the chickens to eat. scratch with more oats are better in summer and scratch with more corn is better in winter.

Cheaper than the scratch grains (with the wheat) right now is something that's called "chops" around here. It's cracked corn, without the other grains.
