Raccoons are not just nocturnal animals. They do come out during the day (much to the general public's disbelief). Every time I have seen a hawk eat something it picks the eyes out if it doesn't straddle the prey with its feet on the head and feet and eat the chest and bowels out first. Remember they pluck and pull with their beak. Never have seen one eat the head first yet. Did you inspect it for any type of marks that might indicate the predator? foot prints, punctures from talons, teeth marks??
