arg! my BR just faked me out! while I was in the pen she got in the nest box and started nesting and panting and squatting, moving stuff around. Kinda like she was in labor or something . I got excited thinking I might see her lay our first egg! so I waited and watched and waited she did this for like 45 min. I kept the other chickens from disturbing her as they all got curious, and then.....NOTHING! she jumped out like nothing was going on, went got some water and just started roaming around! I think she faked me out! ha!

I found out in a book that both of those behaviors mean that they are getting close to laying eggs. I never knew that until I read this book. I am still waiting for my hens to start laying eggs!

The only time I saw "squat-walking" was when the pullet who wasn't close to egg-laying had been dust-bathing, and when a few bread crumbs landed nearby she was apparently too lazy to lift herself up and squat-walked to pick up some crumbs.

Did you find out what caused this? I have one that is two years old and now is squatted all the time and stays that way when walking? It's like she is stuck in a squat.
