What is on her beak?

I have this one quail who has something going on with her mouth and beak. Her beak looks chipped on top and has a bump on the bottom. I feed her like a game bird feed.

This is the 3rd quail I have gotten from this specific breeder and they have all died randomly. The ones I have had and raised myself are alive and well.

So my question is could bad genes be a part?

She is 1.5 years old.

Most definitely it's the genes and/or the health of parents when the eggs were laid.

I wouldn't want to breed those ones you get from there.

If you can incubate your own, there are tons of folks selling eggs in the Facebook poultry groups.

It looks like an injury, but it also looks like her beak is malformed. I wouldn't get any more quail from that person.

So I just called the place I purchased them from and they said they use the same breeder (which I knew) and they have not gotten any other complaints. But ALL of the ones I have gotten have died and mine that I breed are fine. I will say they did not come from a farm store

The lump doesn't look to serious, so I wouldn't do anything about that unless it grows. Her beak could use some filing or trimming, but for that, I would just give her a rough rock or a brick so she can rub her beak against it and file it down herself.

The best thing you can do for her is to make sure she has a good place to live and a good quail diet of 20-24% protein for starters. you can see other necessary nutrients for her in this article:

One that's for your state. Just search in the search bar for chicken groups and your state. You'll see some that might be for your area too.

I am in the poultry group, however I raise my own quail who are genetically strong so I’m pretty stoked on that!

She did end up dying, like the rest of the quail from that breeder.

I have some on the incubator so I have that to look forward to

I will say that it’s for the best as it’s awful to have a bird suffer like that and to have breeders just breeding poor genes to make a quick buck. It’s cruel in a way and I’m just happy to not have her suffer.
