Idel hatchery has Self Blue Silkies, what is that? Is that Lavender or what? If so I am so getting 10 or more. I have been around the world and back looking for them on the internet. No body has them. GGRRR.

Thanks,
Cheyenne~

Lavender is not blue. It's an entirely different gene. Lavenders are more evenly colored all over, whereas the blues have darker hackles (and saddles in the males). Lavender bred to lavender will give you lavender, whereas blue bred to blue can give you blue, black or splash. That is the simplified version of it.

If you do decide to order from Ideal, when the chicks arrive make sure they are indeed self-blue/lavender. My second order from them for 10 self-blue silkies turned out to be 10 blue and a couple black silkies.

All the other times they have gotten my order right, but their great customer service did reimburse me since they were sold out for the rest of the year.

The black ones could be split lavenders. From the Ideal website:

"Genetically they are the same as Black Silkie Bantams with the addition of the addition of the lavender (lav) gene in the homozygous state (lav lav)."
