i culltave my broody hens , never treating them badly and or chasing them off the nest..! but rather giving them lots of love & feeding treats food & water in their nest boxes, and none have ever been mean towards me , i pet them and & tell them they are such good girls , all my hens know they are all good girls & just hearing me say those words they understand its all a good thing , its just so wonderful knowing my hens really trust me , last spring i had several australorp broodies all were 8 months old , and were great broodies even thou they only had golf balls & no real eggs under them, it was a test run for them to see just how long they would stick to it..? they did great and 2 even stayed on in the nest for 2.5 months, my older big hupp blue aussie hen big gray girl did 1.5 months on her nest back then , but my husband of 30 years had just died and so many things were happening , but so far this spring i have a few new hens doing a day or 2 in a nest both are large Delawares at 8 months old , they were warning all the hens who looked in on them to get away HA but ,this one morning i saw one of those young Delawares on a nest full of 12 eating eggs, i didn't get to picked up before she found them HA, so i tested her to see if she would peck at me , but she just let me take the 12 eating eggs out from under her wile protesting loudly...lol... but never attempted a peck at me so i petted her for being so sweet & trusting , so this year i do have 6 eggs i do want to try and hatch from both my hupp girls one a giant black hen , i call pretty black girl & one big blue hen i call big gray girl, so calling all willing broodies to come and hatch my aussie eggs or even both there mothers do want that privilege.? which ever happens first..im all for it , so time will tell whats going to happen to my 6 hatching eggs..? so keeping all my fingers crossed for 6 beautiful pure hupp line aussie babies! to come popping out of their shells..!!!!!!!! : )
