Just wondering what is the best broody goose? Im considering getting geese and I know I wont be able to incubate them myself so what breed is best known for being a good broody?

How many eggs does this breed usually set on?

During breeding season my Buff American goose sets eggs very well. I let her hatch out a late clutch last year (they hatched LATE June) and all of the fertile eggs hatched (6 of 7).

I have had great luck with my Sebs. I have had the parents hatch and raise very early for Maine weather with great results in an unheated barn.

As far as I know there is no one breed of goose known for its broodyness. Breeders of large geese (that don't produce a lot of eggs) tend to use Muscovy ducks or individual Chinas that tend to go broody (some lines of Chinas have been bred for egg production and do not go broody well) a duck or a light goose is less likely to crush a egg or a gosling than some of the truly huge geese. Usually no more than 4 large goose eggs under a Muscovy. no more than 6 under a china.( both will hatch much larger numbers of their own eggs but the large goose eggs are to valuable to risk more to one bird) I hope this was a help.

Well, I vote for Toulouse! I started with three...I sell some every year and (unfortunately) before my solid fence went up I lost a bunch to traffic and dogs. I usually only lose the babies now to owls and such. I have "gotten new blood" a few times but there are probably 40 Toulouse out there now! This took about 20 years or so with absolutely no intervention from me. Every female that I have is on a nest 2x each year and hatches most of the eggs....the record for one bird is 17 goslings! They are so funny because the females bring the babies out and then they are all just a big ring of adults with the babies inside protected. A lot of the time the gander will take the hatched ones out so the goose can sit on some late hatchers, then she joins the group. It is all very fascinating to watch---I just LOVE the spring! I'm getting two goslings from a BYCer in march. They are gray Pom mixes... I think... Lol

I've got muscovies but Ive been having a problem with the hens flying over to the neighbors house so it looks like im going to have to clip wings.
