What is the best chicken to show?

So glad you joined us.

Sorry, cannot help with show chicken advice, I just have hatchery mutts, but lovable one and all.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I would personally go with something like Black Australorps, which have relatively simple APA standards. The fancier a chicken is, the more ways it can have points deducted in show or even be disqualified. You likely won't have to worry about feather discoloration (a very common flaw in chickens) with Black Australorps, and even if you don't win in show, Australorps are the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds, so you will get lots of eggs from your hens. Also, they are extremely hardy, as well as calm and gentle. My children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) made lap pets of ours. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get for show, good luck with your flock.

Michael has a good idea. In breeds like silkie they nit pick over a million things. Black Australorps sound like a good, honest breed. Silkies and some others get powdered to make their feathers looks fuller. I guess that is allowed though.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I also don't know a lot about showing but I do know that silkies, sebrights, cochins and polish are good for showing. However they aren't the best egg layers. In which case you should look into australorps, marans, orpingtons or sussex.
