Commercial hybrids are excellent layers. White Leghorns are great layers but they ARE very squawky-bawky-flappy-nutty at the tiniest hint of any excitement. They're probably the best pure breed. The other top layers are mostly hybrids or crosses of two pure breeds. I don't have any experience of red sexlinks but I've heard loads of good things about them.

For white eggs, WL's are definately the best producers from my exp. but they are very flighty. Golden Comets (RSL's) are excellent layers of brown eggs & Black Australorps are good layers as well.

If you raising backyard chickens, I would stray from the commercial leghorn and go for one of the many high production breeds like sexlink, austrolorp, barred rock. that's just my opinion, there is nothing wrong with leghorns.

Holland--I have researched this one a little as it's the only white egg dual purpose type; all the others are brown egg layers. Thought this one would add a little color to the egg carton and no t have the high strung behavior of the super egg machine, the leghorn. THey are rare and very hard to find. Try Sandhill, if I remember correctly.
