Hope this is the right forum! I need ideas for garden fencing. My chickens free range in the yard most days and have destroyed the veggie garden plot. I want to get it into shape this weekend and come up with a not too expensive way to keep the flock out over the summer. I found some *perfect* used picket fencing on Cragslist last weekend, but alas it was sold before I called

The only other affordable idea I have is metal pound in stakes and the wire fencing. Even that is a bit pricey! If I go that direction, I will have to grow a pretty vine to cover the ugly and figure out how to build a gate.

I got some 3 ft tall t posts and 3 ft plastic fencing from Lowes that work great. Plastic was cheaper than wire and low enough to step over. Thus far, the chickens have not realized they can fly over a 3 ft fence.

We just put in the metal t-post fencing with 2"x4" rectangular wire around our garden for this same reason. I was afraid it would be atrocious, but it's not too bad, and if it does the job, all the better. You're right though, not *that* cheap, but easy to install. For a gate, we just use an oversized piece of the fencing that hubby cut separately and we hooked it on with mini carabiners. Good luck!
