What is the cure for a feather picker?

The man who sold us our chicks flicks blue ink on the tails of the feather pickers, I don't know if it is a good thing to do but I thought I'd share.

Storey's book on How to Raise Chickens said that dog food protein comes mostly from grains (which the chickens already get) and cat food comes from animal protein.

Goldilocks has both opinions and she can decide what to use.
