No idea what they had in them, but a friend of my dad's gave me a bunch of mixed bantams back in high school. The hens were all solid black, and the roosters were either black or black and red. They could fly like birds. It was nothing for them to fly from here to my neighbors 3 doors down, or out of the coop and into the woods. They'd fly up on the roof of the house in a heartbeat. When I got rid of chickens, I never could catch one of the hens. She lived around here wild for 12 years. Oldest chicken I've ever seen. I got a pair of cochins eventually and made the mistake of letting them out one day. That hen was every bit of 6 or 8 years old at the time, but a few weeks later, she showed up with 11 baby chicks. She was a hoot. My brother lived next door for a while and had horses. She'd roost on their back at night. Not sure what happened to her. She just finally disappeared. Sorry to ramble...but those were the best fliers I have ever seen.
