What is the yellow chick on left side of posts?

Sorry if this is dumb . . . but I can't figure out what the yellow chicks stand for on the left side of the page when I'm looking at posts. Some posts have them, others don't.

They chick means you haven't read the post or a response to the post. Once you click on the post, the chick disapears.

Its not a dumb question, for the longest time i thought it meant that is where everyone was, until someone else asked the same question.

Good for you for asking! I wondered the same thing. Only thing is, even when I read/scan all of the posts in some of them the yellow chick is still there.
My current question is about the "title" thing. I moved up a level and I would love to see a list of all the levels.
