can someone give me some direction? my girl has been somewhat lethargic and not laying eggs. she has loose poops and is eating less than normal. I wasnt picking her up to much because she was molting, but its been a long time so I picked her up to check for mites or see what was what and there was a large scab on her keel bone. it is about the size of a dime. the thing on the pink towel is the scab I took off. solidified pus it looks like. the wound has a hard rim around it. I have no idea how she got this. I am with them everyday. It is obviously an infection, I dont know what to give her. I have baytril. I will call the vet in the morning and see if she can squeeze her in. I have brought her inside since the wound is now open and I dont want dirt in there. All my girls are so important. If anyone has seen this before I welcome any insight. thank you.

If the initial scab was hard, then likely it's breast blister. You'll want to clean out the wound with something like Chlorhexidine or Betadine (Povidone Iodine), the apply triple antibiotic ointment.

The lethargy is concerning. If the vet can't see her, I'd start her on an antibiotic.

Screenshot (151).png i saw this while looking at the backyard flock. the yellow on her wound cannot be wiped off. soaking daily? what type of antibiotic? she does sit more than the others on the ground. she was x-rayed in June and everything looked ok. she has not laid an egg since. you are right, she is not as active as the others and it is concerning.

so i soaked her in warm epsom salt bath this morning and the yellow in the wound wont come out or the dark red surrounding the wound. is there something else I can do to get to the new tissue? multiple soaks? tweezers? I then sprayed it with vetricyn and put a glob of neosporin on it. she is in the house due to wound is open now. it does not smell or feel hot to the touch.

You mentioned you had an antibiotic on hand.

Not sure if I'd soak her. Clean the wound with Chlorhexidine, apply triple antibiotic ointment.

If she's been laying around a lot, this can cause breast blister. You probably need to figure out the cause of her laying about so much. Some common things are reproductive disorders like cancer, EYP, etc. Check her over for lice/mites and see that she's staying hydrated and eating.

So i was able to get her into see my vet yesterday. she finished debriding her wound. there was still some yellow tissue. all gone now. I started her on baytril 2 days ago and will give for 10 days. she is actually more alert since the antibiotic. I quit the chlorhexidine as the vet said to much can inhibit skin healing and instead of triple antibiotic I am putting honey on her wound 3 times a day. I had to give her a bath this morning, her feathers from the triple antibiotic and chlorhexidine and debridment were a mess. she likes baths. after i blow dried her feathers i put honey on with a q-tip. good amount to completely cover the wound. It actually looks pretty good now. I have put her back outside with her sisters in a large crate with foam padding on the bottom of the crate and puppy pee pads on top. she can be with her sisters and stay clean at the same time. I tried keeping a sweater over her wound with a non stick bandage and piece of foam over that, but she wasnt having it. the vet said in 10 days we will see how the wound is healing and if its good, that is most likely the reason she has been sitting so much previously. I did not find the breast blister until it had been a long time in the making. If it does not heal well, then we will do a ultrasound to see if there are any tumors inside. her belly is normal so the vet was not concerned with the ultrasound right now.

Final update: ladybird is doing very well. she is now back with her sisters fulltime. The wound is almost 100 percent healed. The honey is a miracle cure.

Final update: ladybird is back with her sisters full time today. The honey treatment was excellent! She stayed on the foam padding in crate in the run with her sisters during the day and then in the house at night. I have wrapped the roosting bars in a towel for a couple weeks until she is completely healed. She loves baths and blow dries and the taste of honey.I bought poultry shampoo so i did not dry out her skin or feathers with soap. She did stay on baytril antibiotic for 11 days. She is eating well and acting normal again. thank you for all your help. No ultrasound needed.
