I just got my Hova bator Genisis today and have set it up. On the window is a plastic and I'm not sure if I can take it off. It says nothing in the instructions. I can't read the thermometer with it on though so can I take it off?
And is the red light supposed to be on all the time?
Thanks, I have silkie eggs I want to set this weekend just want to understand how this thing works first.

Is it thin plastic? If so it is just protection during shipping and can be peeled off.

The red light will stay on when its heating the bator up. Once it reaches the pre-set temp, the light will go out until it turns back on to heat. When you first set it up, the light will be on for a little while

Thankyou I peeled it off. The temp seems to be holding steady but its only about 97. Isn't that too low? I'm going to by a hygrometer tomorow should I get one with a thermometer in it also? Or is the one that comes with it good enough? Sorry for all the questions I have searched and searched and can't find the answers I'm looking for. Is there a link to beginners first use?

Yeah that's too low. I usually keep mine at 101.6-102.5. Sorry to be so technical but it does make a difference. I don't have a link but I have some "smart"

things off the top of my head. ( I am dumber than a brick) The hatch is better if the temperature is a LITTLE bit higher, The slightest degree off of this temperature though could kill your hatch. I have had 85-90% hatch rate at these temperatures. Even had one with 100% rate but these were my own eggs not shipped. Operating a incubator is real simple. Just read the owners manual and figure it out. as for the Hovabator, I have personsonally never fooled with one but i do have a Miller Little Giant. A week before any of your eggs arive, set up your hatcher. Get it adjusted to where you just BARELKY have to touch the knob for it to turn on or off. Most od the time if your temperature is stablr in your room, there will be no problems with the hatcher temperature. And if the power goes out, don't worry. They can stay out of heat for about 1-1.5 hours. It doesn't affect the hatch. Now when you start to get in the 2-... that's when you might have a few die. My power went out for 2 days and lost every baby I had promised to some people to buy. The power went out for 2 hours and had the 100% hatch rate with my eggs. Believe it or not. As for humidity, I would buy a digital temperature/hygrometer. Those are the easiest on you. But the regular one works just as good. But if you are busy I would suggest the digital. Just add water to the moisture rings at the bottom every **2 days** depending on how humid the weather is. Oh and if the power goes out, don't open the hatcher. That can affect the hatch too. I sure do hope that this helps you and hope you have good luck wioth your hatcher and please come back with anymore questions. I am not very smart but I try and help the best I can from previous knowledge.

Thank you yellow flower and good luck! Dusty

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm hatching my own eggs. Have 21 silkie eggs to put in today. I made the mistake of not getting the hydrometer when I got the incubator so I have one on the way. I'm wondering if I can still set the eggs and then put in the hydrometer when I get it. Should I take some of the water out so as to assure my humidity isn't too high? I put in a new thermometer and it reads just about 100. So the other one is wrong.... or maybe right and the new one is wrong. Why is this so frustrating? It's supposed to be fun isn't it? Thanks for all your help! I'm sure I will have 100 more questions before this is over LOL

No just leave the water filled up. the incubator 95% of the time will "adjust" the humidity itself. Yeah you can set the eggs and when the hygrometer gets here just get it ready to put in and put it in. just like adding water. Am not the smartest person in the world but I am glad i could help somebody with the little brain I have. Haha. Anyways good luck with your hatch and keep the questions coming. Thanks
