In 60 years of being around chickens I have never seen this. My friend sent me this picture and said that Joy is not eating or drinking much. There was bloody discharge on the feathers. I suggested Epsom salt soak and meal worms. The bleeding has stopped, she is eating a bit and preening herself now. But what is this?

Personally I would not cut it open, I would cull the hen and bury her.
