I got to thinking about square footage per chicken and one thing lead to another...
So...here's a visual help on comprehending 4 chickens per square foot. It's just worked up in Excel so no great graphics.
Each small square represents 6 square inches. Once you add anything like a feeder, waterer, nestboxes, roosts, even wall studs and door/window framing then that can possibly have an negative impact on the square footage available to the chickens.
Be aware that if you insulate a coop (interior walls, paneling, etc., over insulation) that you decrease the square footage even more. Somebody check my math out on this!!!...
but using a basic 4x8 sheet of plywood for the flooring and then building standard stud walls sitting on top of the deck you end up with a rough dimension of 41"x89" of actual floor space which breaks down to only 25.34 square feet and going by the "4' rule" would allow only 6 chickens. That is without figuring the thickness of the interior paneling!
Just some thoughts (for what they're worth)...
