What is your favorite breed?

I was wondering what everyone's favorite breed is and why

Plymouth Rock. Classic American dual purpose breed. It out performed the Sussex and the reason for development of the Orpington, so England had something to compete with the Plymouth Rock.

The breed has a multitude of varieties to choose from, many need work towards the standard of perfection. In a nutshell if your an American and want a dual purpose bird then look no further than the Plymouth Rock. The variety I'm working with currently is Silver Penciled. If your a subject of Great Britian or a tory then go with Orpington; they have a larger selection of varieties to choose from.

I don't have a favorite breed yet, because I'm a newbie chicken person. However I would like to know what breed is the most gentle and friendly.

I am looking to expand my flock and seeing what other people have for favorite breeds will help me decide what to get

My favorites, Black Sex Links (Black Stars) are actually hybrids rather than a true breed. I like them because they are very friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 large, brown eggs per hen per year. Among the standard breeds, my favorites are Australorps which are an extremely hardy breed in both heat and cold, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of large, brown eggs.

The ultimate breed for being gentle and friendly are Silkies, which are a bantam breed. Among the standard breeds, those with a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) include Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Sussex, and Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list.
