What is your favorite heritage breed and why?

I am new to turkeys currently have 4 BBB. I can tell they will be headed for freezer camp soon. I would like to get turkeys again in the spring but I am wanting something that will have a longer lifespan.

Heritage are all basically the same except for body size and color.

I have had royal palms, bourbon reds, Narragansett, blue slates and bronzes.

Palms are eye candy to me just like the black and white pattern. The are smaller in body weight than the rest. They can be flighty.

Bourbon reds are a little bigger in weight. Bourbons are extremely nosy. They have to be involved in just about anything you are doing outside. Almost to the point of being a pest. Lol.

After all of them I'm going to settle for reds for next year's breeding stock.

For a good look at a majority the varities that are possible check out porters heritage turkeys.

Basically just pick a color that you like and go with them.

I like bourbon reds, who seem more friendly, and I also like blue slate, wheatgrass, mottled, and blacks. I keep a mixed colorful flock. It's too hard to pick just one breed. Pick the color that appeals to you.

I can say Royal Palms atleast the few i've owned are pretty mellow and very friendly. I also own almost every other breed.

I think all mine are about the same, I think I have had almost every one there is.

I have given up on keeping them Pure and have decided to go with the odd colors. They look so cool grazing and following me around the yard.

Now If I could just stop them from free ranging inside the show birds barn...

Ya 90% of mine are pure atm but i only have 2 toms so they will be mixing next year can't wait to see the colors they make. Mine also follow around the yard, the one tom even knows his name and comes running when i call him, even tries to fight the dogs lol

So do i, i bought 2 artisan golds and turns out the both grew up to be males guess i gotta sell them and look for females again. I want a black turkey.

I just sold 2. They are easy to make if you have slates you get more than you want.
