What is your favorite thing about owning chickens?

I've always wanted birds ever since I was a little girl. I used to sit in our yard growing up and fantasize about all the birds flying down and landing on me, letting me hold them, singing with me. My dad, pulling my leg once, told me if I could sprinkle a little salt on a birds wing, I'd be able to catch it. Lol. I filled my big brothers super soaker water canon with salt from my mom's spice cabinet....needless to say they were both P-I-S-S-E-D and I still didn't catch a bird...sigh.

I don't have 80+ years to commit to a parrot, and I tried keeping a parakeet and it was just awful.
Chickens are awesome in that they fulfill that little girl fantasy dream side of me that wants a flock of birds to run up and greet me, but their less maintenance than a traditional pet bird, and my chickens are just as friendly as my dogs, I can pick them up and snuggle them. They know me and my voice and their always so happy to see me.

Heck I just love everything about chickens honestly. I call them little angels on earth. :)

Wow! I can't believe the lack of responses to this 5 year old thread. Shocking.

I was wondering the same thing, what peoples favorite things were about chickens, so did a search first, and found @IslaBean thread. So low and behold someone else was curious, too.

My favorite is watching them get dirt baths while I'm doing dishes. Funny how they will really dig in and get that dirt way up in there. And usually there is a big wad of them out in front of the window. And when they're all done they just lay over and nap. You'd think they were all dead the way they look. Like their curious personalities too. They're all different for sure. Good thread @IslaBean .

Their socialization with humans and gratefulness for even the smallest things you do for them. The ease of training them and their playfulness. The delight they bring to children's faces. The delight I find in watching a broody momma hatch chicks and teach them how to be chickens.

What I like best, is that they are useful! I still can love them, and hang out with them, but the fact that they provide us with eggs and meat just make keeping them so much more meaning full to me.

It would have been strange indeed if such a topic never had been here before.
There is a thread somewhere with question like this one. It starts with a poll. This poll-question got many reactions. Mine too.
