Dogs won't always take the time to tear them up, especially young ones. I have heard from folks who have had dogs actually snatch and crush the chix with their jaws (or shake until dead), then lay them in piles and go for the next one flapping. Once the prey is still, a dog can lose interest unless it is an experienced hunter/eater.
