What kind of bird is this?

i I never had young chickens before, always older ones. I am wondering why the comb or whatever that is on this chicken is so dry looking? Is it the breed or the gender?

The comb is odd. If you got it from a backyard breeder then it is probably a cross breed and that is why it's comb is unusual.
