What kind of bird sounds more like a bull frog?

I didn't get a look at it as it was behind a tree--but I had a large crow taking off who made a u-turn and ran behind one of my shelters when it was encountered. We have a couple of different types of haws, we have barn owls and great horned owls--but I've never heard this sound before and I've never seen a crow cower like that before.

Every time I have seen one after hearing what we called the 'rain crow' sound they were acting even more secretive than usual. I have a family of 9 crows (parents, 4 this year young, and 3 last year birds) on my property that treat me to all sort of sounds and actions.

Thanks. I live in a wildlife paradise and encounter something every day that I've never before seen or heard. Generally, I get a good enough look to google it. Not so today.

As a kid I shunned organized sports and social activities. Yep, I was called the 'Weird Zookeeper'. I spent all of my time outdoors up on the Sourland Mts or wandering the farm fields that made up my community. We didn't have computers back then so I had to sleuth to find out 'what was doing what'. I continue doing it today, but also use the computer for natural detective work. :old
