What kind of Chickens should I get?

I am interested in raising some chickens. I have raised a few before but they were a mixture of different types of chickens. I have recently moved to a new home with some land and want to order some chicks to raise. I am wanting a breed that is medium to large in size and lay brown eggs. I live in South Carolina so it does get warm during the summer and need a breed that will do well with a warmer climate. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks

If you want a chicken that's a great egg layer brown egg layer and a decent size then I would recommend the following breeds :

Black and Red Sex Links -
These are hybrids so are known by lots of different names such as Black stars, Golden Comets, Red Stars, Black Rocks, etc. They are tame, hardy and excellent layers of large brown eggs. Red Sex links look like standard chickens and black stars are black with some red colour around the neck.

Barred Rocks -
Quirky chickens that are tame and are good layers of light brown eggs.

Rhode Island Reds -
Good, hardy hens that are reliable medium brown eggs.

Barnevelders -
Pretty birds that lay a good sized medium to dark brown egg

Australorps -
Popular, tame, hardy, reliable layers of large brown eggs.

Light and Speckled Sussex -
Pretty birds that lay plenty of large light brown eggs.

Thanks. My grandfather has a few of the barred rocks. They are very nice to watch. I will probably go with either the Barred Rocks or the Australorps. They both seem to be great birds. Would you suggest Bantams?

It depends what kind. Some can be very tame and loving, others can be flighty and timid. I wouldn't recommend getting bantams as a beginner until you get to know your flock. Bantams are less able to stick up for themselves so it's important that they are going into a flock where bullying is unlikely.

Barred rocks are a good choice as are RIR or dominiques. I personally don't care for bantams, but that's up to you.
