My first question was what kind of comb my rooster has... It hasn't been altered. I've had him since he was small. Sort of looks like a single comb with the points cut off, but I know that is not the case. Interesting fact...we hatched some chicks this spring, and several of them have this odd looking comb!
Also, any thoughts on what kind of rooster he is?? I know he's a mutt. The place I got him from had a big leghorn rooster with bright orangy yellow legs running around (among other types).
If he's a mutt, then he may not have any standard kind of comb. Comb genes can combine in different ways the same as genes for egg color, etc.
For example, here's a modified pea comb on a second-generation EE mix--Mama was an EE, so he got pea comb genes from her, daddy was a Marans, so he received genes for a large single comb on the male side. See how it's not quite right for a pea comb?
I have an EE Roo with a comb exactly like that, but he is Leghorn cross with a Ameraucana, most of them combs have a single and pea comb chicken mixed, not sure the breed, but he's unique
Funny you should say that chickenman76, because we also got another mixed pullet last summer at the same place at the same time that we got this guy and she ended up being an olive egger! We were sooo surprised when we saw that first egg.
This roo fertilized two of our white leghorns eggs which we hatched this spring and they have this same comb. He also fertized several of our EE's eggs that we hatched, and a few of the Roos look like they are going to have this comb instead of a pea or single comb. We've had him over a year, he's definitely a keeper....very sweet and a good protector of the girls. When he was young, he had a mystery disease on his face and I thought it never would heal. He was quarantined for a long time with scab like places covering most of his face and eyes. Two different rounds of antibiotics didn't seem to help. I considered culling him once or twice. . So glad I didn't. One day he just started getting better.
