My budding chicken farmer, my soon to be 11 year old son, is wanting to find a resource that shows the eggs a breed lays with the breed. He would love to find a book that has this. So far we have found books about breeds, but they don't show eggs. Anything we find with egg pictures is talking about hatching eggs but doesn't necessarily talk about the breeds.

Surely something like this exists? I think what he is wanting to do is have a larger variety of different eggs rather than having lots of brown eggs or white eggs. He is also wanting to know how all the eggs are different - like which breeds are known for larger eggs and so on.

Thanks so much for your help.

If you get the catalog from the Meyer Hatchery, it will show pics of the eggs beside pics of the various breeds of chickens......And it's free!

THere are post here on BYC, for a quick view, not hard copy. Several posters have put up terrific photos naming each breed: turkey, chicken, quail, goose and more. Photos are used in the hatching eggs for sale section too. That helped me to see the color of the marans which I thought was chocolate, like dark chocolate candy bar; the photos helped me to see the reddness of the eggs. Hope your son enjoys the catalog with the photos!

This wouldn't be good for a birthday present, but it will help satisfy his thirst for knowledge: http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html

Check
out the "Egg color & productivity; egg size" column

Everything you ever wanted to know about eggs and then some. Then in the first column, under the drawing of the breed, there are links out to other sites -- the feathersite links almost always have pictures, often with eggs, chicks, and adults.
