the floor is wood so I want to make sure that when the laidies poop, they will not rot the floor with all the acid in their
manure, do I use a glossy paint, how 'bout regular paint.

I like "free" or at least "real cheap"

Clean, dust, apply thin coat of primer, apply at least one or maybe two thin coats of pretty much whatever type of preferably-exterior-grade paint you can get your mitts on, and there ya go. Mild extra benefit from using gloss or semigloss but honestly ANYthing is pretty ok.

You're not doing it to prevent manure from rotting it, really -- very little poo is going to come into contact with the wooden floor, right, b/c you will be using shavings or straw or whatever? It is more for ease of cleaning, and to prevent any dampness in the litter in general from rotting it.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Heh...we bought glossy white interior paint. Yes, not cheap. But it's worked REALLY well, so far. It lovely and white in there and all the poop shows up really well on the walls.

No...really...it's pretty easy to clean, and all that.

I'll be honest, I didn't do a thing to the floor of my coop other than laying down a layer of cheap, checker board linoleum. My coop is off the ground, it doesn't leak, and I keep the shavings "freshened" up....I don't forsee any moisture problems in the near future. The linoleum cleans up easy enough. Not sure if it's cheaper than a paint. I'd say go the cheapest route.

I used spar "eurethane"... this is the outdoor kind used on boats or outdoor furniture. I used in on the floor , nest box floors and half way up the walls. Eurethane in a quart can from walmart cost me about $13.00, used the cheap foam "brushes" to put in on with,,,then throw them away.
moisture will not get thru to the wood, figured I may have to wash the floor at some point. This was in a 6x8 tractor so a quart was plenty.

Oh, you don't know my coop.

My DH also used the Truck Bed liner stuff in a can. Rhino Liner. I have used it for over a year and its GREAT!!!!!!!!!! my floor was plywood as well. I can hose the floor off if needed. I used the shavings on top of that. Its great. I cant say enough about it. It is NON toxic to the birds once it dries as well.

See my page for some pictures of it.
