What kind of quail are these?

I am a photographer as a civilian and for the military. Needless to say, I look at many photos. One day I came across a picture story of quail fighting in afghanistan. I thought this was odd. I google searched and didn't find much but some videos.

Are this full grown quail? What type are they?
