What larger cities are ROOSTER-friendly in the Western US (or elsewhere)?

Hi there,

we are currently living in Austin, TX, where there are no restrictions on keeping chickens, hens or roosters, as long as they don't make more noise than the neighbours can tolerate. In fact, it seems like many people here love roosters (to a point...)! Our bantam rooster definitely makes less noise than the neighbour's dog, and we love having our rooster around.

Anyways, we are thinking about moving further west, but it turns out that roosters are nowadays banned in many larger cities, especially those with recent legislation that allowed hens, but banned roosters at the same time. So here is the question, in which cities are roosters still welcome or at least tolerated. Curious about other people's experiences....

I don't know the answer but I'm confident that even if the city tolerates roosters the neighbors won't. Not unless the lots are really huge and maybe not even then. Consider yourself lucky if you can keep the chickens. Would you practice with a rock band at 5 in the morning with neighbors nearby?

Wrooster, how is that for an encouraging reply If your rooster sounds like a rock band, you are lucky and should go on tour with him!
But seriously, every community is different and around here, nobody has an issue with a little crowing here and there. So there must be other communities like that...

The fact that something is legal doesn't mean it's welcome and the fact that no one complains does not mean no one is bothered. Just my opinion, but I think it's a rare situation when someone can keep a rooster in an urban area and not be more annoying than one should be to their neighbors. If it truly works for you and those around you, I'm happy for all concerned. I would not know how to tell the OP to find a place like that.
