what other foods can chickens eat? i need help.

I think they will eat almost anything. My girls favorites are grapes. They just go crazy for them. I also give some cheap bird seed, scratch.
The other day I had some leftover Seafood fettucine alfredo, OH MY They went bullistic over it. It was devoured in just a few minutes. I hope that was ok to give, No ill effects yet....The only thing I have found they don't like is celery. Best of luck!!!!

My girls are nearly 12 weeks old. I have been treating my girls with oats I get from one of my local feed stores. They love the oats. I also threw in a piece of alfalfa bale which they pick at and have scattered over a portion of their run. Also I grow lettuce. Every once in awhile I throw a head in and they devour it. I feed them vegetable scraps except raw potato peels. They all seem fine. I recently purchased some scratch. I have been reading in some different forums about chick scratch which appears to be just regular scratch that is more finely ground. Do they need grit and are they old enough for grit? I have a 500ft net that I use to net off an area they can range in that connects to their run. I have a gate that I can close in the run. This is all movable including the coop which I do about every three weeks.

if they have access to dirt and such they are probably getting their grit from that.

i loved the post from someone who said that they do what their grandma did, give the chickens the scraps the goats won't eat. that totally cracked me up, because it's true. peole think goats will eat anythig, but really it's chickens. lol

As far as grit goes I live in a very sandy area, very fine grain sand. I don't know if this qualifies as good as true grit.

Grit material need do nothing more than help with the "mechanical" digestion of the birds' feed. With coarse feed, they need grit.

Even a pinch or 2 of sand is probably all that's necessary.
