I was searching for a list of plants that the chickens might not eat- I get they are going to scratch around but was wondering if there was a list somewhere of plants they tend not to like? The only thing I saw was some eat hostas and some don't. Mine do! Now we don't only have to worry about the deer eating them but now the chickens too! Any suggestions? I hate to put up little fences to try and deter them and my hubby hates them- but if it will save some plants I will do it. We have plenty of places they can scratch and dig but like kids they always seem to get into the things we don't want them too!!

I don't know of a list. But one of the only things that survives in my free range area are tiger lilies. The tough wild ones. My chickens eat them in the spring, scratch them all year and yet the plants continue to spread and bloom.

my girls also leave my wild tiger lilies alone. they also show no interest in the iris. both these type of plants also are not a favorite of deer. they seem to dislike the wild native type of plants but love anything that is not native to your area. this may be because the native plants have built up toxins and the nursery plants have had this bread out of them. find a list of native flowering plants for your area and you should be able to have the flower beds you want. just keep in mind chickens love bugs and will dig up your native plates also, they just wont eat them. unfortunately my hens have discovered my flowering bushes and now anything blooming and they can reach has become a new food source. If you use native plants check to make sure they are not poisonous.
