I'm just not meant to have guineas.
I have no trouble keeping chickens, and rarely loose any. First my dogs got the keets (they are chicken broke), then I got that problem solved. Onto another batch (20 more keets), and I lost 10 last night. I've had these second keets for several weeks. I've tried to train them to roost in the coop with the chickens, and they did for a while. Last night 17 of them roosted in the tree that's along the pen fence. My pen is 20 x 12 with the coop attached. Normally, my chickens free range all day, but since I've been training the keets, I keep the pen shut all the time.
I found 5 of them under the tree, just kind of lined up. One was eaten except for it's innards. The others just have broken necks with no sign of anything else. Five are missing. I heard a great horned juvenile owlets calling it's mom the other night out in the pasture. I've heard the mom. Never seen the owls around the house.
I figured an owl would take the head off and not leave it with a broken neck. My cat was out for a couple hours, but I checked the tree, and didn't see him near it last night. I don't see how he could do that much in such a short time, and they were on a skinny limb.
What do you think would kill them and leave them with a broken neck? What ever ate the one left the gizzard and guts.
Thanks.
